Assam STF Dismantles IMK Module: Exposing Violent Jihad Recruitment Tactics
GUWAHATI: The Assam Police Special Task Force (STF) has dismantled a module of Imam Mahmuder Kafila (IMK), an offshoot of the Bangladesh-based Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) established in 2018. Authorities reported that the module expanded its operations in Assam following a regime change in Bangladesh in August 2024. A total of 11 individuals have been arrested-10 from various locations in lower Assam and one from Tripura-on charges related to fundamentalist activities associated with IMK.
At a press conference held late Monday night, STF chief and Guwahati Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta revealed that IMK employed encrypted social media platforms to radicalize and recruit young people in Assam and nearby states, disseminate propaganda, collect funds via hawala or UPI, and facilitate cross-border travel for training purposes.
Among those apprehended were Nasim Uddin, also known as Najimuddin or Tamim (24), Mizanur Rehman (46), Sultan Mehmud (40), Siddique Ali (46), Sharuk Hussain (22), and Dilbar Razak (26) from Barpeta. Additionally, Rasidul Aalam (28) and Mahibul Khan (25) were arrested in Baksa; Junab Ali (38) in Chirang; Afrahim Hussain (24) in Darrang; and Jagir Miah (33) from Tripura. The individuals face multiple charges under the BNS Act of 2023 and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) of 1967.
Mahanta stated that IMK, which is banned in India, was founded by Jewel Mahmud, also known as Imam Mahmud Habibullah or Sohail, a former member of JMB who claims leadership of IMK and advocates the ideology of “Ghazwatul Hind.” The investigation has shown that following the political changes in Bangladesh, high-ranking officials from JMB, Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), and al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) directed IMK to activate and expand its operations in India. Bangladeshi nationals Umar and Khalid were sent to coordinate activities in Assam, with Nasim Uddin identified as the head of the local cell.
The group is alleged to have operated through secure social media channels, particularly one called “Purva Akash,” which served as a key communication and recruitment tool. Individuals from Assam, West Bengal, and Tripura were reportedly radicalized, recruited, and linked financially to the group, including those who held Indian passports and had traveled to Bangladesh, as well as known former members of banned terrorist organizations.
Mahanta further noted that IMK presents itself as a “Ghazwatul Hind-centric extremist module,” promoting an ideology consistent with banned transnational jihadist groups. It has been revealed that extremist literature authored by IMK leaders, including “Sarbobhoumo Khamatar Malik Allah” and “Ghazwatul Hind er Sonkhipto Alochona,” was systematically distributed online to indoctrinate supporters and cadres. This content was circulated through encrypted social media platforms in Assam.
Mahanta indicated that the module maintains active connections with leadership based in Bangladesh and that recruitment efforts intensified following the fall of the Hasina government in 2024 and the release of IMK’s amir. Investigators have found evidence suggesting that some operatives based in Assam traveled to Bangladesh this year using valid passports and visas for training and coordination.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commented on the situation, indicating that fundamentalist groups remain active in Assam, emphasizing that the issue will persist given Bangladesh’s proximity as a neighboring country.
