Exciting January Spacewalk Plans Unveiled by NASA for ISS

January might be a quiet month for most on Earth, but it is a busy time above it. The International Space Station (ISS) continues its orbit, undergoing vital changes for its future. This January, NASA has scheduled two spacewalks: part of routine maintenance and part for long-term enhancements. Before these spacewalks occur, NASA will hold a public briefing in Houston to detail the tasks, associated risks, and their significance. This briefing isn’t a major announcement, but rather an opportunity to reflect on the importance of ordinary maintenance in preserving a complex structure like the ISS.

The briefing will feature officials from the ISS program and flight operations, who will outline the schedule and respond to media inquiries, maintaining a practical focus rather than a promotional one. The first spacewalk is set for January 8, during which astronauts Mike Fincke and Zena Cardman will exit the Quest airlock to work on the station’s power system. For Cardman, this will be her first experience outside the ISS; for Fincke, it marks his tenth, making him one of NASA’s most seasoned spacewalkers. A second spacewalk is scheduled for January 15, but NASA has yet to announce the participating astronauts.

This briefing will concentrate on both spacewalks, explaining their necessity and how they integrate into the ISS’s broader plans. Key topics will include power upgrades, equipment replacement, and preparations for future installations. During the first spacewalk, the astronauts will establish a power channel to facilitate the future installation of roll-out solar arrays, designed to supplement the station’s energy as it ages. The second spacewalk will focus on maintenance work, which involves replacing a high-definition camera, installing navigation aids for incoming spacecraft, and relocating parts of the ISS’s cooling system. While none of these tasks may seem glamorous, they are crucial for the station’s daily operations.

These spacewalks are essential because the ISS requires consistent power and dependable systems. Over time, solar arrays degrade, and cameras and navigation tools need upgrades. Some of this work is also aimed at ensuring the station’s safe and controlled deorbit in the future. The upcoming spacewalks will be the 278th and 279th in support of the ISS and will represent the first for Expedition 74 and the first conducted in 2026.

NASA will stream the briefing and the spacewalks live, allowing viewers to watch from multiple official platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, and X. Coverage typically features commentary from mission control along with live visuals from space, providing an exciting window into the ongoing operations of the ISS.
