Meghalaya Activists Demand Urgent Anti-Racism Law Following Student’s Death

Pro-Inner Line Permit (ILP) groups in Meghalaya have intensified their demands for a national anti-racism law and expedited justice following the tragic death of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, who was fatally assaulted in Dehradun. They described this incident as part of a troubling trend of racial violence targeting individuals from the North East.

The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) has expressed deep shock and sorrow over Chakma’s death, which occurred on December 26 after he sustained injuries earlier in the month in Uttarakhand. The organisation emphasized that this crime is not an isolated incident; instead, it reflects the entrenched biases that people from the North East face across various Indian cities.

CoMSO chairman Roykupar Synrem pointed out that racial profiling and violence against individuals from the North East have been recurring issues in cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, and Dehradun. This pattern highlights systemic failures in protecting their safety and dignity. Chakma’s reported last words, “We are not Chinese, we are Indians,” starkly illustrate the discrimination that continues to affect citizens from the region.

In their statement, CoMSO called for the immediate establishment of a fast-track court to expedite the prosecution of the accused and ensure prompt justice. They urged both the central and state governments to implement a comprehensive anti-racism law aimed at combating crimes that stem from racial and ethnic hatred.

The organisation also advocated for the creation of 24-hour “North East Helplines” and specialized police units in major urban areas to ensure the safety of students and working professionals from the North East. They insisted that educational institutions and local authorities should be held accountable for failing to provide a secure and inclusive atmosphere for everyone.

Synrem asserted, “We cannot accept a situation where our youth are targeted and killed because of their appearance,” adding that ongoing indifference would only exacerbate feelings of alienation among people from the North East. He stressed that mere expressions of sympathy and condolences would mean little without substantial legal and institutional reforms.

Furthermore, CoMSO warned of broader mobilization efforts, stating that they are ready to collaborate with other organizations across the North East to initiate democratic actions if effective measures are not implemented to address what they term the rising tide of racial hatred.
