Guwahati Educator Receives Prestigious National Maths Award for Excellence
Guwahati-based mathematics educator Dinesh Lahoti has been awarded the National Maths Special Achievement Award 2025, honoring his significant impact on mathematics education in India. This recognition highlights his commitment to making mathematics more engaging and inclusive for students from various social and academic backgrounds.
The award ceremony took place at Science City and was organized by the All India Ramanujan Maths Club in collaboration with the Gujarat Council of Science and Technology. The event welcomed educators and academics from across the country, celebrating innovative practices in mathematics education.
Lahoti’s achievements span over 15 years of dedicated efforts to improve how mathematics is taught and perceived. “In Assam, there was a time when mathematics was often viewed with fear,” he explained. “I have consistently aimed to foster understanding and curiosity while emphasizing hands-on application.” His initiatives have positively impacted thousands of students and teachers, particularly in Assam, while also extending to educational communities in other regions of India.
Responding to the recognition, Lahoti stated that the award is a collective achievement. “Though it carries my name, it truly belongs to every student, teacher, parent, and collaborator who believes that mathematics can be learned joyfully,” he noted.
In 2012, Lahoti founded Edugenie with the goal of transforming classroom mathematics into an interactive experience. Through this platform, he employs innovative methods such as hands-on activities, puzzles, visual demonstrations, and real-life connections to mathematical principles. Edugenie has organized various events, including WOW Maths Shows, Community Maths Festivals, and structured teacher training programs, all aimed at enhancing conceptual understanding and reducing anxiety around the subject.
Subhamoy Goswami, a Class IX student, shared his experience: “I joined Edugenie three years ago. Previously, I feared mathematics the most. After attending the sessions, I started enjoying solving problems. Lahoti sir’s techniques helped me grasp the ‘why’ behind the formulas.”
Educators working with Lahoti emphasized that these initiatives not only bolster students’ foundational knowledge but also empower teachers with creative tools that encourage exploration and discussion over rote memorization.
The National Maths Special Achievement Award is given annually to educators who have made notable contributions to promoting mathematical thinking and inventive teaching practices. This award serves to inspire educators to continue exploring new methodologies, reaffirming that mathematics, when approached creatively, can become an enjoyable subject rather than a source of fear.
