Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on December 28 that Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has assured that all individuals involved in the murder of Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old from Tripura, will be apprehended. Angel, an MBA student from Nandanagar in West Tripura district, was reportedly attacked by a group of six individuals in Dehradun on December 9 after he objected to a racial slur. He succumbed to his injuries on December 26 while receiving treatment in a private hospital.
Speaking to reporters in Hezamara, Saha described this incident as both tragic and unexpected. He stressed that he personally reached out to Chief Minister Dhami regarding the situation. “I have already spoken to the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami ji, about the tragic incident involving our student Angel Chakma, who was brutally assaulted in Dehradun. He has assured me that strict action is being taken,” Saha stated.
According to Saha, Dhami informed him that five suspects have already been arrested in connection to the case, while one remains at large. He also mentioned that directives have been issued by the central leadership to ensure justice for Angel’s family.
Meanwhile, Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the leader of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), expressed his commitment to see the perpetrators brought to justice. In a social media post, he revealed that he had spoken with the victim’s family and urged party members, including those from the Youth Tipra Federation (YTF), to support them during this difficult time. The YTF articulated their solidarity with the grieving family, calling for a fair and comprehensive investigation and severe penalties for those responsible for this heinous act.
The incident has ignited widespread outrage, with calls for immediate justice and stronger measures against racially motivated violence.
