Mohammad Bakri, a prominent Palestinian actor and director known for his impactful roles in international television and politically charged films, passed away on December 24 in Israel at the age of 72. Reports indicate he had been suffering from heart-related issues. Bakri was celebrated for his performances that vividly portrayed the complexities and realities of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Fans of HBO’s “Homeland” may recall his role as the fictional vice president of Afghanistan, a character whose unpredictable actions often troubled Claire Danes’ CIA officer, Carrie Mathison. Born in northern Israel, Bakri’s funeral took place on the same day in his hometown of al-Bi’neh.
Bakri first gained recognition for his role in “Beyond the Walls,” a powerful prison drama that received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, solidifying his reputation for tackling politically sensitive and morally intricate themes. More recently, he appeared in the second season of “House of David,” portraying the King of Edom.
