Tragic Lynching of Hindu Man in Bangladesh Linked to Extortion Conflict
A Hindu man was brutally beaten to death by a mob in Rajbari district, Bangladesh, late Wednesday night. Authorities have linked the killing to an alleged extortion dispute, raising significant concerns about rising mob violence in the country. This incident follows closely on the heels of another lynching of a Hindu man over unverified blasphemy allegations.
The victim, identified as 30-year-old Amrit Mondal, also known as Samrat, was assaulted around 11 PM by villagers who accused him of attempting to collect extortion money. He was found in grave condition and was rushed to a local hospital, where he was declared dead around 2 AM, according to reports from The Daily Star.
In the aftermath, police detained one of Mondal’s associates, Mohammad Selim, who was found in possession of two firearms — a pistol and a locally made gun. Authorities indicated that Mondal had a criminal history, including multiple cases against him, one of which was a murder charge. Police have also alleged that he led a local group named “Samrat Bahini,” which reportedly intimidated villagers and extorted money from them.
Local residents informed police that Mondal had recently returned from India after an extended stay and had resumed his extortion activities. On the night of the incident, he and several associates allegedly attempted to demand money from a local resident, Shahidul Islam. When Shahidul’s family raised an alarm by calling out “robbers,” villagers gathered and attacked Mondal. While some of his associates managed to flee, Selim was apprehended with the weapons and later handed over to the police.
This incident follows another tragic case in Mymensingh district, where 27-year-old Dipu Chandra Das was lynched over alleged blasphemy. Witness reports indicate that he was tied to a tree, assaulted, and his body was subsequently set on fire. His remains were later recovered for a post-mortem examination.
The interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, condemned the earlier lynching, asserting there is no place for communal hatred or mob violence in what it terms a “New Bangladesh.” The government has promised stringent measures against those responsible for these acts of violence.
These violent events occur amid increasing unrest in Bangladesh, heightened by the recent death of political activist Sharif Osman Hadi, who died from gunshot wounds while receiving treatment in Singapore. His death has incited widespread protests, vandalism, and attacks on political and diplomatic establishments throughout the country, contributing to an already precarious situation.
