Students Transform Neglected 15-Year-Old Road in Just 48 Hours!
In a remarkable act of inter-state collaboration, two prominent student organizations from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have come together to repair the long-neglected Margherita-Deomali road. This two-day voluntary initiative took place on December 22 and 23, involving the All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) from the Margherita unit and the All Tirap District Students’ Union (ATDSU) from Arunachal Pradesh.
Despite the chilly weather, hundreds of student volunteers dedicated their time to restoring the crucial connection between the two states. Armed with an excavator, shovels, and gravel, they worked tirelessly to fill deep craters and dangerous potholes along the stretch from Dirok Gate to Margherita.
Student leaders emphasized that this road has remained in a “dilapidated and dangerous” condition for the past 15 years, a status that underscores its vital role in supporting trade, education, and healthcare. Aasu Margherita Unit President Abhishek Baruah and General Secretary Mriganka Chutia led the initiative, joined by ATDSU President Jawang Bangsia and General Secretary Priyang Pumoh Tati Matdi.
“This joint program is not merely about filling potholes-it’s about delivering a strong message to both state governments regarding their failure to maintain a road that acts as a lifeline for countless people daily,” stated Abhishek Baruah. He also noted the broader implications of their work, with Jawang Bangsia emphasizing that the collaborative effort illustrates how civil society and student organizations can unite across state lines when governments fall short.
The Margherita-Deomali road serves as a key economic and social link between Assam’s Tinsukia district and Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap district, facilitating essential trade as well as access to education and medical services. Local residents and commuters have expressed their gratitude for the students’ work while also voicing frustration over government inaction. A local businessman reflected, “These students have achieved in two days what our governments have failed to accomplish in 15 years.”
Both Aasu and ATDSU plan to continue monitoring the road’s condition and have called on the governments of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to allocate funds for its reconstruction, ensuring the road can better serve the community it supports.
