Night of Terror: Karbi Anglong Violence Leaves Families Homeless
Fresh accounts from the violence-stricken Karbi Anglong district reveal a night of chaos on December 22, when widespread arson and mob attacks left several families homeless and resulted in at least one fatality. Local resident Sushil Malakar recounted the terrifying scene as families fled in fear for their lives.
Malakar, who has lived in the area for years with his uncle and aunt, reported that there was no prior warning or indication of impending violence. “We thought we were safe here,” he stated. The unrest began around 6 PM, under the cover of darkness, when a mob started hurling stones at homes.
He recounted a chilling warning from someone in the crowd, familiar to his family, urging them to escape or face death. “Fearing for our lives, we ran. We could not take anything with us,” Malakar said, lamenting that their belongings were later reduced to ashes.
In his immediate neighborhood, Malakar claimed that six to seven houses were set ablaze, while over 50 homes across the larger area suffered the same fate. A particularly harrowing incident involved an ill boy who was reportedly left behind during the chaos. “He was sick and could not escape. They set the house on fire and the boy was burned alive,” he said.
Despite a heavy police presence now in the area, residents remain in a state of fear. “Right now, we feel a little better because the police are all around. When the police leave, we feel scared again,” Malakar shared.
Highlighting the deep-rooted ties of the affected families, Malakar noted that they have lived in the area for generations. “We have been living here for years. My parents were born and brought up here,” he reflected, conveying a profound sense of loss and insecurity following the violence.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident while maintaining security forces in Karbi Anglong, striving to restore normalcy to the district.
