According to Dr. Valentina Ogaryan, clinical director of the Simms/Mann UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology, one effective method for fostering happiness is to make time for play. Engaging in enjoyable activities isn’t just for children; it’s beneficial for adults, too. The National Institute for Play emphasizes that activities driven by fun and silliness help reduce stress while promoting resilience and optimism. Whether it’s dancing with a pet, building with Legos, or simply enjoying a karaoke session, prioritizing playtime can lead to significant mental health benefits.

Physical activity is another key pillar of well-being. A 2018 study involving over 1.2 million adults in the U.S. found a meaningful correlation between exercise and improved self-reported mental health. While the ideal frequency is approximately 45 minutes of movement three to five times a week, even short bursts of activity can boost brain health and enhance mood. Dr. Ogaryan points out that movement not only supports emotional balance but also improves sleep quality-an essential factor for maintaining mental health.

Sleep hygiene is critical. Research shows that inadequate sleep heightens the risk of mental health issues, including depression. Dr. Ogaryan advises establishing a consistent sleep schedule, creating a quiet, dark sleeping environment, and avoiding stimulating content before bedtime to enhance sleep quality.

In today’s fast-paced, highly consumer-centric culture, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by constant information and noise. Dr. Ogaryan recommends consuming less-whether that means cutting back on news, social media, or overall screen time-to alleviate stress. Setting personal limits on how much content you absorb can significantly ease mental strain.

Practicing mindfulness and present-moment awareness can help individuals reclaim a sense of calm amidst chaos. “When everything feels larger than life, focus on making the world a little smaller,” Dr. Ogaryan suggests, advocating for a daily approach where you take things one step at a time. This strategy allows you to concentrate on your immediate actions rather than becoming bogged down by future worries.

Finding a daily anchor, such as a brief walk or a moment of quiet reflection, can also provide grounding during hectic days. Dr. Ogaryan encourages individuals to intentionally carve out time that serves as a calming influence, helping to regulate the nervous system.

Self-kindness is another critical component of emotional health. Replacing the inner critic with a supportive, compassionate voice can lead to greater happiness and motivation. Studies show that self-compassion is tied to a deeper, more meaningful sense of fulfillment. Dr. Ogaryan stresses the importance of recognizing personal efforts rather than indulging in negative self-talk.

Social connections play a vital role in our well-being. Dr. Ogaryan highlights that although stress can lead to isolation, nurturing small, intentional interactions-like sharing a laugh with colleagues or chatting with a friend-can significantly enhance feelings of happiness and community.

For those struggling to improve their mental well-being despite these strategies, seeking support from a therapist or physician is crucial. Mental health issues are prevalent, affecting one in five Americans each year. Dr. Ogaryan concludes by emphasizing the importance of seeking help if personal efforts do not yield the desired relief. Prioritizing mental health is essential, not just during the new year but all year round.
