UDP Calls for Urgent Revival of Peace Talks with HNLC in Shillong
The United Democratic Party (UDP) has urged the Meghalaya government to earnestly work towards bringing the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) back to the negotiating table, highlighting the critical need for peace and security in the state. This appeal comes in the wake of an IED explosion on December 15 at the Dhar Construction Company camp located near Shymplong village in the East Jaintia Hills district. Although the explosion damaged a water tanker, it fortunately resulted in no injuries. The incident has raised concerns regarding HNLC’s attempts to reassert its influence in the region.
UDP General Secretary Titosstarwell Chyne spoke to reporters, noting that the HNLC had previously participated in peace negotiations, achieving some initial progress. However, he expressed a lack of detailed information on the reasons behind the breakdown of talks and the withdrawal of the HNLC from the negotiation process. Chyne emphasized the UDP’s commitment, both personally and on behalf of the party, to encourage the HNLC leadership to return to dialogue for the sake of peace and stability in Meghalaya.
“I hope the state government will genuinely work to invite the HNLC to resume negotiations,” he concluded, underlining the importance of constructive dialogue in fostering a peaceful environment.
