Liverpool maintained their position at the top of the Premier League with a gritty 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in North London on December 21. The match was marked by pivotal moments, including a red card for Spurs shortly after the half-hour mark. Xavi Simons received a yellow card for his challenge on Virgil van Dijk, which was upgraded to a red after a VAR review for serious foul play. Despite being a man down, Tottenham put up a resilient fight, and clear chances remained few before halftime as both teams struggled to assert dominance.

The breakthrough came in the 56th minute when Alexander Isak, who had just come on as a substitute, unleashed a powerful finish past Guglielmo Vicario, courtesy of a clever pass from Florian Wirtz. Isak remained on the ground after being caught in a follow-through, but his goal gave Liverpool a crucial advantage. Ten minutes later, Liverpool doubled their lead with a header from Hugo Ekitike, who outjumped Cristian Romero to connect with a looping cross, bringing his tally to five goals in three league matches.

Tottenham managed to pull one back through Richarlison, who capitalized on a defensive error, but their hopes of a comeback were dashed when Romero received a second yellow card in stoppage time. Alisson Becker made several crucial saves in the final moments of the match, denying Pedro Porro and handling a dangerous cross from Wilson Odobert, ensuring Liverpool secured all three points.

In another match, Dominic Calvert-Lewin continued his outstanding scoring streak, helping Leeds United secure a commanding 4-1 victory over Crystal Palace. Calvert-Lewin scored twice in the first half, both goals resulting from long throws by Ethan Ampadu that the Palace defense failed to manage. With his double, Calvert-Lewin has now scored in five consecutive Premier League matches, putting him alongside club legends like Rod Wallace and Mark Viduka. Ampadu added a third goal on the hour mark, reacting quickly after Palace couldn’t clear a corner. Justin Devenny converted a stoppage-time penalty, giving Palace a glimmer of hope, but Anton Stach extinguished it with a brilliant free-kick deep into added time. This result sees Leeds rise to 16th place, six points clear of the relegation zone, while Palace slipped to eighth after rotating their squad following a European fixture.

Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League with a narrow 1-0 win at Everton, demonstrating resilience at Hill Dickinson Stadium. With Manchester City having temporarily moved above them earlier in the day, Arsenal responded effectively. The decisive moment occurred in the 27th minute when Jake O’Brien handled a corner from Declan Rice. Viktor Gyokores capitalized, smashing the resulting penalty past the Everton keeper. Arsenal had additional chances to extend their lead, but both Leandro Trossard and Martin Zubimendi hit the woodwork. Everton pressed for an equalizer and felt they should have been awarded a penalty for a challenge by William Saliba on Thierno Barry, but David Raya and Arsenal’s defense held firm, ensuring a vital three points.
