Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha emphasized the urgent need for the swift execution of the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project during a meeting on December 22. He highlighted the importance of enhancing multimodal connectivity corridors that connect the North Eastern region with the rest of India and neighboring countries. This discussion took place during the third meeting of the High-Level Task Force for Infrastructure and Connectivity Development in the North Eastern States, chaired by Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Jyotiraditya Scindia, via virtual platform.

Dr. Saha pointed out that developing the North East as a gateway to the Bay of Bengal and ASEAN countries is crucial. He stressed the establishment of integrated logistics hubs, freight rail networks, and improved energy and digital infrastructures. He noted that while the region has significant potential for growth, realizing this potential necessitates collective efforts from all North Eastern states.

“The North Eastern states must work together to strengthen infrastructure and communication systems,” Dr. Saha asserted. He acknowledged that coordinated measures are necessary to tackle challenges in various domains, including road, rail, air connectivity, waterways, power supply, gas availability, and digital connectivity.

At the meeting, Dr. Saha provided a detailed outline of the strategy proposed by the Task Force for developing infrastructure and connectivity in the region. He explained that this roadmap was created after a thorough evaluation of the current infrastructure, identification of existing constraints, and consideration of future needs.

He particularly focused on identifying priority areas for regional development, such as infrastructure macro-grids, energy, oil and natural gas, tourism, and border trade. Dr. Saha expressed optimism that collaborative efforts between the Centre and the states could significantly enhance connectivity and establish the North East as a pivotal gateway to South East Asia.

Senior officials from the DoNER Ministry and representatives from various North Eastern states, including Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, attended the meeting. From Tripura, Industries and Commerce Secretary Kiran Gitte, Planning Secretary L.T. Darlong, and Industries and Commerce Director Dr. Deepak Kumar participated, along with other senior officials from the Tripura Institution for Transformation office.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia commended Chief Minister Manik Saha and the Tripura government for their comprehensive preparations, integrated planning, and foresight reflected in the Task Force report, according to officials.
