Goa Police Investigate Luthra Brothers After 25 Lives Lost in Nightclub Fire

Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, owners of the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Goa, have been arrested following a tragic fire incident that resulted in the deaths of 25 people. This incident, one of the deadliest fire tragedies in the state, has prompted an intense investigation into potential safety violations and enforcement failures within Goa’s nightlife sector. The Luthra brothers, who once lived a life of luxury, spent a night in Anjuna police custody, sleeping on the floor and consuming minimal meals as police conducted rigorous questioning regarding the December 6 blaze.

A North Goa court has placed the brothers in police custody for five days, giving investigators the necessary time to determine how alleged safety lapses and illegal operations contributed to the disaster. The ongoing case has spotlighted serious enforcement failures across Goa’s nightlife, characterized by packed venues and temporary structures that often overlook safety measures despite consistent warnings from authorities.

Goa Police are now interrogating the brothers on over 80 key points related to the nightclub’s operations, financial transactions, and event permissions. Investigators aim to uncover who authorized the fire show during the night of the incident and whether any commercial interests compromised safety protocols. During their court appearance, the Luthras requested medical attention citing health problems. Their lawyer highlighted Saurabh’s spinal disc issue and Gaurav’s tailbone fracture, requesting they be provided a mattress while in custody. However, medical assessment deemed them fit, and the court denied additional comforts, recognizing the tragedy’s gravity.

The Luthras’ arrest became particularly dramatic as they attempted to flee the country shortly after the fire incident. Goa Police issued an Interpol Blue Corner Notice leading to their apprehension in Thailand, from where they were deported to India under police escort.

The fire, described as North Goa’s worst tragedy, erupted in the nightclub during a busy weekend event, with survivors reporting rapid flame spread that left little opportunity for escape. Police investigations suggest the venue was operating without valid fire safety licenses, which expired almost 18 months ago, violating mandatory safety norms. Conditions surrounding the nightclub, including narrow access roads and limited exit points, worsened the scenario as fire brigades struggled to reach the site.

Facing charges of culpable homicide and negligence, the Luthra brothers’ case has broader implications, potentially uncovering regulatory failures and accountability among officials who allowed the nightclub to operate under illegal circumstances. As the investigation proceeds, it highlights a pivotal moment for Goa’s vibrant nightlife industry, raising urgent questions about safety standards that have long been neglected.
