Kuki-Zo Community Blocks Cyclist on Manipur Peace Route: Tension Escalates
Manipur’s Kangpokpi district experienced escalating tension on Wednesday, December 17, as a cyclist from the Meitei community attempted to navigate through the Kuki-Zo-dominated area as part of a self-declared “Manipur Peace Route” initiative. This action incited significant backlash from local residents.
The cyclist, identified as Malem Thongam, aimed to traverse National Highway-2 near Brigadier M. Thomas Ground, prompting immediate protests led by local women. They took to the streets, determined to block any attempt by him to pass through the district. Men from surrounding areas quickly joined their ranks, transforming the busy highway into a site of persistent public demonstration.
Protesters insisted that Cyclist Malem Thongam be prevented from crossing Kangpokpi, labeling both the timing and the selected route of his mission as provocative, especially during the Christmas season. They argued that their actions were necessary to preemptively avoid any potential escalation of communal tension in a highly sensitive and volatile context.
“We are peace-loving people. During Christmas, we do not want any activity that may create tension. We are here to protect peace in Kangpokpi,” stated a protester amid the demonstration.
Earlier, the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) had issued a stern warning to officials, calling for an immediate halt to the proposed cycling route through Kangpokpi. The committee cautioned that the Kuki-Zo community would not take responsibility for any negative incidents should the event proceed despite local opposition.
As of this report, the situation near Brigadier M. Thomas Ground remains tense but under observation, with protesters keeping their vigil and asserting their resolve unless authorities take action to prevent the cyclist from entering the district.
No official communication has been released by local administration as of yet. Security forces are on high alert, closely monitoring developments to avert any breakdown of law and order.
