Unveiling the Divine: Yamini Reddy’s Powerful Kuchipudi Production Celebrates the Birth of Surya and Life’s Interconnectedness
Kuchipudi dancer Yamini Reddy is set to perform “Surya – Tvam Surya Pranamamyaham” this weekend in Hyderabad, accompanied by a live orchestra and a troupe of 25 dancers. This performance, which will explore the emergence of light through the lens of Kuchipudi, marks her first presentation under the Natya Tarangini Hyderabad banner. “Surya is a heartfelt offering to the Hyderabad audience. We journey into that powerful moment when consciousness first opens its eyes to light,” Reddy explained. Originally slated for a 2018 debut in the city following its premiere in Delhi, the performance was postponed due to the pandemic, a wait that many fans had been anticipating.
Reddy’s fascination with the concept of creation sparked her research into the Nasadiya Sukta, the 129th hymn of the tenth Mandala of the Rig Veda, which reflects on the cosmology and origin of the universe. Inspired by this ancient text, the production depicts the cosmic emergence of Surya, the Sun, as the essential force that brings light, order, and life to the universe. The narrative intricately illustrates the birth of Surya and how the nine planets, or Navagrahas, form and orbit around the Sun. The 60-minute performance will encapsulate the evolutionary history and interconnectedness of all life forms. Reddy noted, “The first ray of light might have initiated the evolution of life, leading to the creation of plants, aquatic beings, terrestrial animals, and birds. If the Sun represents the Paramatma, all life on Earth is connected to that supreme soul.”
While traditional Kuchipudi dance often revolves around themes of deities, Reddy aims to emphasize Nature and the philosophical aspects of the universe in this production. Although grounded in classical dance, “Surya” incorporates contemporary elements to highlight Nature’s significance. Reddy’s intention is to convey a vital message about the importance of natural balance. The performance culminates in a tribute to Surya, drawing parallels between the Surya Namaskaram in yoga and dance.
Managing the technical aspects, including lighting and a live music team led by Kolanki Sai Kumar and P. Vidyasagar, poses a significant challenge for Reddy. She acknowledges the complexity of coordinating 25 dancers through four extensive segments, bringing the story from creation and the Navagrahas to the realm of Prakruti and the concluding sequence. “It was like a jamming session; everyone brought their inputs together,” Reddy shared about the collaborative nature of the creation process. The presentation, a part of the Kalaarchana series, features choreography contributions from Padma Bhushan award winners Raja and Radha Reddy, alongside artistic direction from Kaushalya Reddy.
“Surya – Tvam Surya Pranamamyaham” by the Yamini Reddy Repertory will take place at Shilpa Kala Vedika on December 20. Tickets are available on Bookmyshow. This engaging performance promises not only to captivate audiences but also to deepen their understanding of the profound connection between light, life, and the cosmos.
