At least four people were killed and approximately 25 others injured in a severe multi-vehicle accident on the Delhi–Agra Expressway early Tuesday morning, authorities reported. The pile-up involved seven buses and three cars, leading to several vehicles igniting, with some victims reportedly charred in the flames.
The crash occurred around 4:30 AM on the Agra–Noida section of the expressway, close to Milestone 127, within the jurisdiction of the Baldeo police station in Mathura district. Initial investigations indicate that heavy fog and extremely poor visibility were significant factors in causing the chain reaction.
Police confirmed that all injured individuals were promptly transported to nearby hospitals, and none are reported to be in critical condition. Rescue teams and emergency responders arrived swiftly to the scene to assist passengers trapped in the vehicles.
Mathura Senior Superintendent of Police, Shlok Kumar, stated that the accident was primarily caused by near-zero visibility due to thick fog. He noted, “Several vehicles collided with each other in quick succession. After the initial crash, some buses caught fire. Emergency services were deployed immediately, and rescue operations are nearly complete.”
Traffic on the expressway was halted for several hours following the incident, forcing authorities to divert vehicles to alternative routes as the area remained blocked. Subsequently, debris was cleared, and government vehicles were arranged to transport stranded passengers to their destinations.
SP Mathura Rural, Suresh Chandra Rawat, detailed that the incident began with a collision between three cars, which set off a chain reaction involving seven buses, including one state roadways bus and six sleeper buses. All of the buses became engulfed in flames. A total of 11 fire tenders were dispatched to extinguish the fire, which has now been brought under control, with four bodies recovered so far.
This incident follows a series of fog-related accidents in the National Capital Region, which claimed at least six lives and injured several others just a day prior. Multiple similar pile-ups were reported on the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, the Delhi–Alwar Road, and the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, with dense fog and severely reduced visibility being a common factor in these events.
