In an interview with Iranian media on Monday, Lavrov emphasized that addressing the root causes of the conflict is essential. He mentioned NATO’s eastward expansion, the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO, territorial disputes, and the need for security guarantees as key issues that must be tackled.
Lavrov accused Europe of ignoring efforts to find a solution to the crisis, instead using the situation to bolster its own geopolitical position and hinder fair settlement attempts from the U.S. and other stakeholders. He remarked that the European approach is akin to prescribing quick fixes that provide only temporary relief, stating, “They only prescribe medicines that make you feel better for five minutes. They will never make a proper diagnosis.”
He also noted that recent contacts with the United States signify a positive shift, suggesting that U.S. officials are beginning to better understand Russia’s perspective. Lavrov urged for a lasting resolution rather than a temporary ceasefire accompanied by continuous military support for Ukraine. He mentioned that relevant discussions are advancing and that they are awaiting a response from the U.S. regarding potential U.S.-Ukraine talks.
