Young Naturalist from Dzongu Earns Prestigious National Recognition!
GANGTOK: Sonam Wangchuk Lepcha, a young naturalist from Dzongu, Sikkim, was honored with the Young Naturalist Award at the 13th Balipara Foundation Awards held in Guwahati on Thursday evening. This prestigious recognition acknowledges his significant contributions to butterfly conservation over the past decade.
Wangchuk has been dedicated to raising awareness and conducting research in this field. In 2016, he published a book titled ‘Butterflies of Dzongu’ and has contributed numerous scientific papers focused on Sikkim’s butterfly species. Notably, he discovered the Chocolate-Bordered Flitter, a butterfly previously unknown to science, in his home region of Dzongu.
In response to receiving the award, Wangchuk expressed that this national-level accolade serves as a profound motivation for him to sustain his conservation efforts. He extended his heartfelt thanks to Chief Minister P.S. Golay for his unwavering support and to Forest Minister Pintso Namgyal Lepcha for his encouragement and assistance. This recognition not only highlights Wangchuk’s achievements but also underscores the vital importance of conservation initiatives in promoting biodiversity.
