Urgent: Manipur BJP MLAs Call for Action to End President’s Rule in Delhi
A high-level meeting for all Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs from Manipur is set for December 14 in New Delhi, potentially signaling a shift in the political stalemate as the state continues under President’s Rule. Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh confirmed on December 12 that the central leadership has mandated attendance from every BJP legislator. Although the official agenda remains undisclosed, he hinted that discussions about forming a new government could take place.
“MLAs have been called to Delhi to review the situation in Manipur. We have not been informed of the exact agenda, but it may involve government formation,” Singh stated in Imphal during the 86th Nupi Lal Day observance. Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 13, just days after Singh resigned on February 9. The state continues to grapple with ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023, resulting in over 260 deaths and displacing more than 60,000 people.
In an interview with India Today NE, a BJP MLA noted that North East coordinator Sambit Patra reached out to most legislators individually, instructing them to attend the 5:30 PM meeting. A. Sharda, the state party president, has also made contact and may be present.
Notably, Kuki-Zo MLAs, including seven from the BJP, have also been summoned, and their positions are being closely scrutinized. All 10 Kuki-Zo legislators have previously insisted on having a “separate administration” before agreeing to any government formation efforts. While several BJP MLAs are advocating for the restoration of an elected government, the Kuki-Zo faction has stated they will not support any arrangement until their political demands are acknowledged.
The Assembly, which has a total of 60 members, currently has an effective strength of 59 following the death of NPP MLA N Kayisii. The BJP holds 32 seats, although seven of its Kuki-Zo MLAs support the call for separation. Despite receiving pushback from NPP, JD(U), KPA, and an independent MLA, the BJP maintains a majority with 43 members, which includes five defectors from JD(U).
The scheduled meeting of BJP MLAs coincides with President Droupadi Murmu’s inaugural visit to Manipur, amplifying concerns regarding the ongoing governance gap and increasing expectations for a return to an elected administration.
