Heartfelt Tributes at Dharmendra’s Prayer Meet: A Celebration of Legacy
Bollywood veteran Hema Malini conveyed her deep sorrow during a prayer meeting for her late husband, superstar Dharmendra, held on December 11 in Delhi. Starting her address with a Sanskrit shloka, she expressed the profound loss she is feeling. “It feels like a companionship that stood the test of time has suddenly been taken away,” she shared, highlighting the shock and grief of losing her life partner.
Hema spoke fondly of Dharmendra’s generosity, humility, and compassion, emphasizing the strong bond they shared, which evolved from their on-screen chemistry to a loving marriage. She honored him as a devoted husband, cherished father to their daughters Esha and Ahana, and caring grandfather to their five grandchildren. Reflecting on his wisdom, she recounted his advice to nurture family “with love and patience” and noted his kindness toward her extended family and friends.
The prayer meeting, organized by Hema and her daughters, attracted a notable gathering, including celebrities like Kangana Ranaut and Ravi Kishan, alongside various politicians. This was a continuation of honoring Dharmendra, who passed away on November 24, with a prior prayer meet held on his birth anniversary by his sons Sunny and Bobby Deol.
Prominent political figures were also in attendance, including Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and several BJP MPs such as Anurag Thakur, Kiren Rijiju, and Ashwini Vaishnaw. Dharmendra, whose versatile roles in films like Sholay, Chupke Chupke, and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani have left a lasting impact on Hindi cinema, was highly revered.
Beyond his cinematic achievements, he served as an MP, judged the show India’s Got Talent, and appeared in numerous television series. Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP chief J.P. Nadda paid heartfelt tributes during the gathering. Nadda referred to Dharmendra as “the BJP’s pride,” while Kangana praised his simplicity and connection to his roots.
Hema, visibly emotional, described his passing as an “inconsolable shock.” Dharmendra’s illustrious career was honored with accolades such as the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997 and the Padma Bhushan in 2012. He had also briefly served as an MP from Bikaner in 2004. His final film, Ikkis, is set to release on December 25.
