Anandiben Champions Prohibition in Gujarat for Women’s Safety: What You Need to Know
Uttar Pradesh Governor and former Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel expressed strong opposition to the relaxation of liquor prohibition in Gujarat, emphasizing the importance of women’s safety. Speaking at the launch of the Gujarati edition of her autobiography, Chunautiyan Mujhe Pasand hai (I Like Challenges), attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, she highlighted that in certain areas of Uttar Pradesh, women still struggle to move freely.
In her speech, Anandiben referred to Amit Shah as “Chanakya,” alluding to his political acumen, and noted his influence, stating he could advise even Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She reminisced about their time together as Cabinet ministers during Modi’s tenure in Gujarat and acknowledged Shah’s strategic decision-making abilities.
Addressing the liquor prohibition issue, Anandiben remarked, “I have heard discussions about relaxing liquor restrictions in Gujarat. In our state, women are able to participate in garba celebrations until four in the morning, thanks to the prohibition.” She contrasted this situation with Uttar Pradesh, where she claimed that women still face restrictions on their mobility.
Anandiben urged caution regarding any changes to the current liquor laws, emphasizing, “We must carefully consider the consequences. Look at where families of former administrative leaders decided to settle after retirement. Many chose Gujarat for its safety and peace for their daughters and women; that peace should not be jeopardized.”
Earlier in the event, Amit Shah praised Anandiben for her handling of political agitations, likely referencing the significant Patidar agitation of 2015. This strong display of support underscores the intricate relationship between the two leaders and their shared governance experience in Gujarat.
