Exploring Nagaland’s Hornbill Festival: A Shocking Menu Surprise!
What a food menu looks like at Nagaland’s Hornbill Festival has captivated the internet, following a viral reaction from a tourist from the United Kingdom. The festival’s traditional food stalls, celebrated for serving rare and indigenous dishes, showcased a menu featuring silkworm larvae, snails, spiders, grasshoppers, porcupine meat, palm civet cat meat, venison, and preparations of game birds.
The extraordinary menu, although common for many Naga communities, left UK tourist Alex visibly astonished. In a now widely shared video, he stands in front of a stall at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, his disbelief palpable. “This is the craziest menu I’ve ever seen in my life,” he exclaimed, pointing to the unique dishes that are rarely found in restaurants back home.
Held every year from December 1 to 10, the Hornbill Festival, often referred to as the “Festival of Festivals,” attracts thousands of visitors eager to immerse themselves in Nagaland’s diverse tribal culture, culinary traditions, and customs. For locals, the dishes highlighted during the festival epitomize centuries-old practices reflecting identity, survival, and a commitment to minimizing waste by utilizing every part of an animal.
Reactions to the viral video have been varied. While many viewers expressed shock, others offered clarifications. One user emphasized, “Just FYI, the civet cat is a wild species found in the jungle, not the domestic cat people keep at home. Important to clarify so the video isn’t misleading.”
Despite ongoing concerns about the use of certain wildlife species in meals, such as porcupine and civet cat, which are considered endangered in some areas, these items nevertheless appear at several stalls throughout the festival.
As the ten-day celebration progresses, the Hornbill Festival continues to showcase not only the rich cultural heritage of Nagaland but also its bold and diverse culinary offerings that have long been integral to Naga identity.
