Assam’s Strategic Move: New Land Customs Station at Indo-Bhutan Border
A new Land Customs Station (LCS) is on the horizon at Samrang along the Indo-Bhutan border in Assam’s Udalguri district. On Sunday, Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota and Bhutan’s Consul General in Guwahati, Jigme Thinlye Namgyal, convened to discuss plans for operationalizing this station.
During their meeting, the officials concentrated on establishing interim arrangements to ensure the station’s functionality. Earlier this year, representatives from various stakeholder agencies conducted a joint site visit to evaluate methods for transforming Samrang into an active border point, aimed at enhancing import and export activities.
Currently, Assam has two operational LCSs along the Bhutan border: Darranga in Baksa and Hatisar in Chirang. In the fiscal year 2023-24, trade flowing through Darranga reached an impressive Rs 1,096 crore, comprising Rs 736.42 crore in exports and Rs 359.61 crore in imports. Hatisar also contributed significantly, with total trade amounting to Rs 811 crore.
