Namchi District Hospital in Sikkim has successfully launched a state-of-the-art modular operation theatre (OT) complex, enhancing surgical facilities for the local population. This new setup includes a pre-operative room, a recovery room, a pre-anesthesia check-up area, and five fully-equipped operation rooms featuring advanced digital control systems, laminar flooring, and HEPA filters.
To ensure safe surgical practices, the complex also contains a dedicated disposal zone compliant with infection-control and National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS). This development aims to significantly improve surgical care for patients from Namchi and its neighboring regions.
In a press release, the hospital highlighted the advanced technologies incorporated into the OT complex, including a C-Arm, harmonic cautery, endoscopic units, a laser radio frequency generator, and a Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) machine. These enhancements will facilitate a variety of surgical specialties, such as general surgery, ENT, and orthopedics, thereby reducing patient referrals and improving access to timely, high-quality surgical services within the district.
Following certification by the hospital’s microbiologist on December 2, the new modular theatres began accommodating both elective and emergency procedures. A ceremonial puja was held on December 3 to mark the occasion before the surgical teams commenced operations in the new setup. The first surgery performed was a hemithyroidectomy under general anesthesia, marking a significant milestone for the hospital.
Namchi District Hospital serves as a secondary-level public health facility, providing a range of outpatient, inpatient, emergency, and specialized medical services to the people of Namchi and its surrounding areas. This upgrade not only reflects the hospital’s commitment to enhancing healthcare delivery but also aims to meet the growing medical needs of the community effectively.
