Why Delhi Capitals’ Coach Says Parting with Faf du Plessis Was Tough
Delhi Capitals have decided to release star players Faf du Plessis and Jake Fraser-McGurk ahead of the IPL 2026 mini auction scheduled for December 16. This move comes after a disappointing season where the team, despite sitting at the top of the table midway through IPL 2025, ended up in 5th place, missing the playoffs.
The GMR Group and JSW co-owned franchise is making significant changes as they seek to revamp their squad. Along with du Plessis and Fraser-McGurk, Afghanistan’s Sediqullah Atal has also been released. Notably, du Plessis has opted not to enter the upcoming auction and will instead participate in the Pakistan Super League next season.
Delhi Capitals head coach Hemang Badani spoke on the ‘TATA IPL Retention’ show, discussing the difficult decisions the team faced regarding player retention. “It’s never easy to release a player of Faf du Plessis’s caliber. Letting him go was a tough decision because he has been a stellar performer in the IPL for many years. However, we felt it was time to bring in younger options who can contribute with a more aggressive playing style,” Badani stated.
Regarding Fraser-McGurk, Badani acknowledged the team’s expectations based on his previous season’s performance but indicated dissatisfaction with the return on a nine crore investment. “Overall, we are pleased with our current squad,” he added.
During the same show, cricket expert Anil Kumble emphasized the need for Delhi Capitals to solidify their top-order batting structure. He pointed out the potential of new addition Nitish Rana as a left-handed option to enhance their lineup, complemented by established players like KL Rahul, Abhishek Porel, and Karun Nair. Kumble noted the importance of consistency and strategic decision-making regarding batting positions.
Kumble also analyzed the auction strategies for other franchises, particularly Kavya Maran’s Sunrisers Hyderabad, suggesting they need to strengthen their bowling attack. He speculated that they might target left-handed batsman David Miller to diversify their middle order, which struggled last season. Kumble emphasized the need for a solid middle phase to support exceptional opening performances from previous seasons. He concluded that if SRH can reinforce their squad with quality bowlers and depth in their lineup, they’ll be in a stronger position for the next IPL season.
