Nepal Election Commission Unveils 168 New Polling Booths for March 5 Vote
Kathmandu: Nepal’s Election Commission has announced the addition of 168 new polling stations for the upcoming general election scheduled for March 5, bringing the total number of polling sites nationwide to 10,967. This change, confirmed by officials on Sunday, aims to enhance voter accessibility.
In conjunction with these additions, the commission has also removed 93 polling locations that were identified as outdated, inaccurately listed, or difficult for voters to access. EC spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai explained that this review was undertaken to address longstanding issues, such as incorrect station names, outdated addresses, and impractical locations. Some polling booths have been merged or relocated to more accessible sites.
The increase in polling stations reflects a significant rise in the voter base. As of the final registration deadline on November 21, a total of 837,094 new voters had enrolled, contributing to a registered electorate of 18.16 million during the last general election in 2022.
Additionally, 120 political parties have applied for registration to participate in the elections on March 5, with the submission deadline having been this past Sunday. Notable parties seeking to register include the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, Nepali Communist Party, Rastriya Swotantra Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, and Ujyalo Nepal Party.
The announcement of the election date has also spurred the emergence of numerous new political parties, primarily influenced by the Gen Z movement that played a pivotal role in the ousting of former Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli. The Election Commission is expected to release the final list of registered parties after thoroughly reviewing all applications in the coming days.
