BTC Winter Session Kicks Off Under Heightened Security Amid Protests
The two-day winter session of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) began on December 1, amid tight security measures, as protests continue to swell over demands for tribal status for six communities in Assam. The session was inaugurated under the leadership of BTC Speaker Tridip Daimary. The first day featured a Question Hour in which council members addressed various development schemes within the BTC. Representatives from the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) were in attendance, with ongoing discussions anticipated throughout the session.
Tensions in the region escalated on November 29, when thousands of Bodo students, spearheaded by the Tribal Students’ Union, marched from Bodoland University in Rangalikhata, Debargaon, to the BTC Secretariat located in Bodofa Nagar. This demonstration was staged in opposition to the Assam government’s controversial decision to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six other communities. The protesting students argue that this move could undermine the rights and political protections of established tribal groups within the Bodoland Territorial Region.
As the winter session unfolds, local authorities are closely monitoring the security situation, given the rising tensions and public discontent.
