The Cybercrime, Economics Offences, and Narcotics (CEN) police wing of Udupi district has apprehended two individuals from Bihar linked to an online fraud that defrauded a local resident of ₹5.72 lakh. The arrested suspects, identified as 20-year-old Dev Harsha and 29-year-old Chandan Kumar, both hailing from Nalanda district, were found in possession of valuable items worth ₹6.15 lakh, including mobile phones, laptops, and cash.
The victim filed a complaint with the CEN police after falling prey to a scam while attempting to become a franchisee for Campa Cola via what he believed was the official website, campacolabusiness.com. Engaging with what he thought were representatives from the renowned brand, the victim provided additional documents and deposited ₹5.72 lakh. However, when further financial demands were made by the alleged fraudsters, he became suspicious of the legitimacy of the operation and sought assistance from law enforcement.
Under the leadership of Assistant Superintendent of Police Harsha Priyamvada and Police Inspector Nilesh G. Chavan, the CEN police initiated an investigation and formed a specialized team. Their efforts led to a thorough probe across Bihar and Bengaluru, ultimately pinpointing the suspects responsible for the fraudulent scheme.
During the investigation, authorities recovered significant evidence, including ten mobile phones valued at ₹97,000, four laptops worth ₹68,000, and cash amounting to ₹4.5 lakh. The operation underscores the increasing sophistication of online scams that exploit victims through seemingly legitimate channels.
The incident serves as a cautionary tale for the public about the risks associated with online business dealings and the importance of verifying information before making financial commitments.
