Delhi’s Air Quality Miraculously Improves After 24 Days: Hope Rises as AQI Finally Shifts to ‘Poor’
Delhi’s air quality showed notable improvement on Sunday morning as the Air Quality Index (AQI) dropped to the “poor” range, registering an AQI of 270 at 6:00 AM, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). This marks a significant decline from Saturday’s AQI of 305, reflecting a positive trend after nearly a month of concerning pollution levels.
The latest AQI reading is particularly striking, considering predictions from the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi, which had suggested that the air quality would remain in the ‘very poor’ category throughout the week. This was further highlighted by the capital’s troubling AQI figures from the previous week: 369 on Friday, 377 on Thursday, 327 on Wednesday, 352 on Tuesday, and 382 on Monday.
Out of the 38 monitoring stations spread across the city, only five-including Dilshad Garden, Jahangirpuri, Nehru Nagar, RK Puram, and Shadipur-recorded AQI levels in the ‘very poor’ range. Conversely, Mandir Marg stood out with a much healthier AQI of 157, classified as ‘moderate’ according to CPCB’s Sameer app. The positive shift in air quality is largely credited to favorable wind patterns and a decline in stubble burning in nearby regions.
Despite the recent improvement, Mahesh Palawat, Vice President of Meteorology and Climate Change at Skymet Weather, cautioned that air quality is likely to remain in the ‘very poor’ range for several days ahead. He noted that although wind speeds are expected to stay elevated, which may prevent AQI levels from plunging into the ‘severe’ category, the overall air quality remains a concern.
The Decision Support System at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology in Pune provided insights into the sources of pollution, revealing that vehicular emissions accounted for 18.7 percent of the pollutants in Delhi on Saturday. This figure is expected to drop slightly to about 18.6 percent on Sunday, indicating that traffic remains a persistent contributor to the city’s air quality issues.
As residents breathe a cautious sigh of relief over the brief respite in pollution levels, the government and environmental experts continue to emphasize the importance of sustained efforts to combat air pollution. With the winter months approaching, maintaining these improved levels of air quality will be crucial for public health and environmental sustainability in Delhi.
In summary, while the AQI may have dipped to a healthier level, ongoing vigilance and proactive measures are essential to ensure that air quality improvements are not only momentary but contribute to long-term benefits for the capital’s residents. With pollution still a pressing issue, collaboration between government agencies, local communities, and environmental organizations will play a vital role in securing a cleaner, healthier future for Delhi.
