TMC Reports 40 SIR-Related Deaths in WB; EC Dismisses the Claims
A delegation from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) alleged to top officials at the Election Commission (EC) that approximately 40 deaths linked to the Special Interventions for Registration (SIR) process have occurred in West Bengal. This claim was dismissed by the commission. The TMC delegation, led by party leader Derek O’Brien, raised these concerns during a meeting with EC officials as the SIR process for electoral rolls continues in the state.
During the meeting, EC representatives emphasized that the independence of booth-level officers must be respected and that there should be no interference during the distribution of enumeration forms. An official later stated that the EC advised the TMC delegation against pressuring or threatening Booth Level Officers (BLOs) concerning dead, shifted, or duplicate voters. The Election Commission reminded the AITC that while political discourse is their right, they should avoid spreading misinformation about election procedures.
After the meeting, O’Brien spoke to reporters, stating that they had posed five questions to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, who did not respond to any of them.
