Tribal Communities Ignored: Pradyot Sounds Alarm on Regional Alliances
Founder of the Tipra Motha Party, Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, criticized national political parties for their failure to adequately recognize tribal communities during a speech on Thursday, November 27. He asserted that many regional parties often ally with national entities out of self-interest, only to find themselves marginalized or politically extinguished later. Pradyot, who is also a royal descendant, made these remarks at a large gathering of the One North East Unity in Agartala.
He urged the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), currently allied with the BJP in the state, to collaborate with Tipra Motha in the fight for tribal rights. He cautioned that if regional parties remain isolated, they risk facing political extinction. “The IPFT should fight shoulder to shoulder with Tipra Motha. Only unity can safeguard the interests of our tribals. If regional parties fight alone, they risk the same fate as many others across the country,” Debbarma stated.
Discussing the challenges faced in organizing the public meeting, Pradyot claimed that administrative barriers were intentionally imposed on Tipra Motha, while other political factions had no such issues. Despite these obstacles, he expressed satisfaction with the turnout, noting the strong presence of people from across Northeast India.
Addressing the socio-economic conditions affecting the tribal community, Pradyot recognized their financial hardships but affirmed their resilience and determination. He remarked, “Today, the tribals may not have money, but they have confidence. The Northeast Manch is a powerful platform for us. One day, the demand for Greater Tipraland will definitely be realized.”
Debbarma concluded his address by calling on the tribal community to raise their voices collectively through the Northeast Manch, asserting that unity is essential for securing their rights and preserving their identity.
The event was attended by notable leaders from the region, including Conrad K. Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya and National President of the National People’s Party (NPP); James P. K. Sangma, Working President of the NPP and Former Minister of Meghalaya; Daniel Langthasa, Founder of the People’s Party (Assam) and Former Member of the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council; Mmhonlumo Kikon, Former Minister of Nagaland; R. K. Meghen, an Author, Poet, Social Worker, and Senior Leader from Manipur; Hemochandra Singh, Former Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly; and Ajoy Edwards, Founder and President of the Indian Gorkha Janshakti Front (Gorkhaland, Darjeeling).
