Discover Zubeen Kshetra: A Cultural Pilgrimage for Test Match Enthusiasts
As Guwahati hosts a flurry of fans and journalists for the ongoing Test match, a significant number of visitors are gravitating toward Zubeen Kshetra in Sonapur, the memorial site dedicated to the beloved musician Zubeen Garg. This location has quickly evolved into a cultural shrine, becoming one of the city’s most frequented spots.
Among the early visitors was Rupesh Singh, a New Delhi journalist who visited the site on Thursday. He shared that the experience was deeply moving, recalling his childhood in Barak Valley when he listened to Zubeen’s music but had never grasped the immense admiration that surrounded the artist. “I was awestruck while talking to the cab driver on my way to Guwahati. I realized that Zubeen was more than just a musician; he was a remarkable human being. That explains why people love him so much,” Singh told The Assam Tribune.
Countless fans from across Assam have been flocking to the memorial for weeks, leaving flowers and taking a moment of silence to honor Zubeen’s legacy. The site has begun to resemble a pilgrimage, attracting those eager to connect with the legacy of an artist whose influence transcends state lines.
This growing recognition has struck a chord with many visiting journalists. Senior sports journalist Kushan Sarkar confessed he hadn’t fully understood the depth of Zubeen’s following until he arrived in Guwahati. Recalling some of Zubeen’s Hindi songs, he mentioned that the track “Hum Khushi Ki Chah Mei” from the movie Life Mei Kabhi Kabhi is a favorite of his. He only listened to the Assamese classic “Mayabini” after Zubeen’s passing. “I was not aware of his cult status. It’s truly astonishing to witness the outpouring of love and emotion people have for him,” Sarkar remarked, expressing a desire to visit the memorial once the match concludes.
Interest in Zubeen Kshetra spans beyond those covering cricket. Ramesh Ganguly, a businessman from Kolkata in Guwahati for work, also intends to stop by the memorial before heading home. “Some friends back in Bengal were planning to visit the site. Since I came for work, I decided to come with my partner. My friends plan to visit in December. Zubeen was quite popular in Bengal, and we are fond of many of his songs,” Ganguly noted.
For many arriving in Guwahati in recent days, the Test match has been the main attraction. Yet an increasing number feel their visit would be incomplete without a reflective pause in Sonapur, where the legacy of one of Assam’s most cherished figures continues to resonate personally with fans.
