Heartfelt Tribute: Tamil Nadu Government Honors Poet Erode Tamilanban at His Funeral
The Tamil Nadu government announced on Sunday, November 23, 2025, that poet and Sahitya Akademi award-winner Erode Tamilanban will be honored with police tributes at his funeral. Tamilanban, who passed away at the age of 92, made significant contributions to the Tamil language and literature throughout his illustrious life. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin directed that these honors be bestowed to recognize the scholar’s enduring impact on Tamil literature.
Born N. Jagadeesan in Chennimalai, Erode district, Tamilanban was a prominent figure in the Vanambadi poetry movement that emerged in the 1970s. This movement is heralded as a vital continuation of Tamil poetic traditions and is credited with revitalizing Tamil literary expression. With a rich career spanning multiple roles, Tamilanban served as a Tamil teacher at New College, Chennai, and garnered acclaim as a newsreader for Doordarshan, renowned for his impeccable pronunciation and intonation.
In 2004, he received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his collection “Vanakkam Valluva,” which features poems drawing inspiration from the ancient text Tirukkural. In an interview, Tamilanban expressed that these poems were crafted as a means to seek understanding directly from the revered poet Tiruvalluvar himself.
As the state prepares to honor Tamilanban with police tributes, his legacy as a champion of Tamil literature continues to resonate. His efforts have not only enriched the language but have also inspired generations of writers and poets. The outpouring of respect and recognition following his passing highlights the profound influence he had on the cultural fabric of Tamil Nadu.
