Future of Sindh: Will It Return to India? Insights from Defence Minister
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, speaking at the Sindhi Samaj Sammelan in the national capital on November 23, highlighted the lasting civilizational bond between India and Sindh, drawing upon a remark by former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani. Singh noted that while geopolitical boundaries may change, the connection remains deeply rooted, stating, “Borders can change. Who knows, tomorrow Sindh may return to India again.”
Sindh, historically home to the Sindhi community and a critical part of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization, was incorporated into Pakistan following the Partition in 1947. Despite this geographical separation, Singh emphasized that the cultural and spiritual ties of Sindh to India continue to persist.
Quoting Advani, Singh remarked, “Today, the land of Sindh may not be a part of India, but civilizationally, Sindh will always remain Indian,” and pointed out that many Sindhi Hindus of Advani’s generation never fully accepted the division of Sindh from India.
The Defence Minister also underscored the region’s cultural significance, noting that many Muslims in Sindh regard the waters of the Indus River as sacred, likening its sanctity to that of the Aab-e-Zamzam in Mecca. He concluded, “Our people of Sindh, who hold the Indus sacred, will always be our own,” reaffirming the enduring emotional and cultural ties that bind the Sindhi diaspora to India.
