Dibrugarh Aims to Mirror Indore’s Success in Cleanliness Revolution
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, has set an ambitious goal for Dibrugarh, urging the city to adopt the successful cleanliness model of Indore, which has held the title of India’s cleanest city for eight consecutive years. While addressing a meeting of the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) on Saturday evening, Sonowal stressed the importance of collective effort in transforming Dibrugarh into one of the cleanest cities in India. “We must all work together to ensure that Dibrugarh, projected as Assam’s second capital, becomes one of the cleanest and greenest cities in India,” said Sonowal, who also represents Dibrugarh in Parliament.
During the meeting, the minister announced plans for a DMC delegation to visit Indore soon to learn about the cleanliness strategies that have garnered national recognition for the Madhya Pradesh city. Indore’s success is credited to strong public involvement, efficient waste management systems, and innovative technology through the Swachh Survekshan initiative.
In a significant step toward modernizing civic services, Sonowal launched the official website of the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation. This digital platform is designed to enhance the accessibility and user-friendliness of civic services, aiming for quicker response times and efficient resolution of public grievances.
Addressing pressing local issues, Sonowal instructed municipal authorities to conduct drain cleaning across all 22 wards of Dibrugarh during the winter season. “The city must be free from waterlogging during the monsoon season,” he added. The meeting also included extensive discussions on crucial development topics such as infrastructure, transparency, health systems, and governance efficiency. Sonowal urged relevant authorities to strictly adhere to project timelines for public convenience.
State Power Minister and Dibrugarh MLA, Prasanta Phukan, announced plans to enhance the city’s healthcare waste management infrastructure, revealing efforts to install a state-of-the-art incinerator in Dibrugarh to manage biomedical waste from local nursing homes and the Assam Medical College and Hospital. The gathering included Dibrugarh Mayor Saikat Patra, Deputy Mayor Ujjal Phukon, DMC Commissioner Jay Vikas, and all 22 ward councillors, showcasing a unified commitment to improving Dibrugarh’s civic standards.
