Experience the Magic: Manipur Cherry Blossom Festival Launches Floriculture Hub
The Manipur Cherry Blossom and Flower Festival commenced on Friday at Motu Tubvii, Mao Gate, situated along the Manipur-Nagaland border, as part of the Sangai Festival. The festival, themed “Where Blossoms Breathe Harmony,” is designed to celebrate the state’s rich cultural heritage, home to over 35 tribes and communities, and will run until November 30.
The event featured T. Pamei, IAS, the Commissioner and Secretary of Horticulture and Soil Conservation, as the Chief Guest, alongside Mamoni Doley, IAS, the Deputy Commissioner of Senapati, as the Guest of Honour. In his remarks, Pamei announced the government’s plans to establish a floriculture hub in the Mao region, taking advantage of the favorable agro-climatic conditions through the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI).
Festival activities include viewing cherry blossoms, nature walks, treks to Elai Che Waterfall and Mt. Esii, and visits to a local potato farm. Vendors showcased flower, fruit, and vegetable stalls, alongside a bazaar featuring local handicrafts produced by Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). Other offerings include indigenous cuisine, food stalls, and a photography contest.
The festival kicked off with the Cherry Blossom Unity Run, which saw 103 participants cover a 10-kilometer route from Tadubi to the blossoming site. A trek to Mt. Esii attracted 118 participants the following day. Additionally, the festival features a photo contest titled “Chasing the Blossom Breeze” and the Khedzii Khoru Competition focused on the theme “Cooking the Flavors of Our Past.”
The Cherry Blossom and Flower Festival will continue through November 23, highlighting a cultural mosaic created in collaboration with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) North East, along with traditional games and a cooking competition for local chefs. Prize distributions and other engaging programs are also slated for the duration.
Later, the Chief Guest, accompanied by Doley and her District Administration team, toured the stalls, which displayed various flowers, vegetables, organic products, handicrafts, and other goods from self-help groups and local entrepreneurs. A total of 53 stalls were set up for this vibrant celebration.
