On a recent visit to Al Jazeera Al Hamra Heritage Village in Ras Al Khaimah, a group of Indian journalists witnessed local school students delving into the rich history of the site. Our guide, who frequently receives calls from schools eager to organize visits, emphasized the educational value of this gem. Unlike the fast-paced allure of Dubai or Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah offers a leisurely escape packed with adventure, culture, and history.
Now listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage Cultural Tentative List, Al Jazeera Al Hamra-translated from Arabic as “Red Island”—is celebrated as the last surviving pearling village in the Gulf, a stark reminder of a once-thriving industry that faded after the discovery of oil. UNESCO’s guidelines dictate that portions of the village remain untouched, while other areas have been meticulously restored using traditional materials like coral stone and sandstone, which the Za’ab tribes originally used to construct their homes and souks.
As we wandered through the powdery alleys, our guide painted a vivid picture of the lifestyle of ancient tribes from the 16th Century until the 1960s, when they migrated en masse to Abu Dhabi in search of new opportunities. The village, founded on land belonging to the Al Qasimi ruling dynasty, thrived in an environment conducive to pearl farming, surrounded by a unique blend of desert, mountains, and coastline.
Traveling to Ras Al Khaimah is convenient, with its international airport and proximity to the larger emirates. The area has various attractions, including Jebel Jais, Dhayah Fort, and the RAK Museum, alongside luxury resorts like The Mövenpick Resort at Al Marjan Island, which boasts over 400 rooms and amenities like a floating water park.
In its peak days, Al Jazeera Al Hamra was a bustling community where men and women undertook multiple roles-from pearl divers to date farmers. The name “Red Island” originates from the sand dunes that enveloped it, surrounded by a lagoon until the late 1970s when it was connected to the mainland. Significant structures still visible today include a fort with a watchtower, a market area, and a two-story mosque. Ingenious architectural features like wind towers and ventilated summer homes illustrate how ancient residents harmonized with their environment to endure extreme weather.
Our guide noted that by the early 20th Century, the village had around 500 houses and housed 2,500 to 3,000 residents. During our exploration, we noted the village’s layout, which is divided into quarters accommodating family groups. The buildings constructed from coral stone and beach rock date to the early days of settlement, while sand-brick structures emerged post-1955.
The now-deserted souk once hummed with activity, serving as a vital trade hub where camels and donkeys transported goods. However, the introduction of cultured pearls in the early 20th Century hastened the decline of the pearl industry, leading inhabitants to leave for Abu Dhabi after oil was discovered. Today, Al Jazeera Al Hamra stands as a preserved testament to the region’s heritage, safeguarded by the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and the Department of Antiquities and Museums in Ras Al Khaimah.
This remarkable village offers a glimpse into a past that shaped Ras Al Khaimah’s identity, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts and culture seekers alike.
