Join the Inspiring Kufos Global Meet: Championing Our Precious Wetlands for a Sustainable Future!
The Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (Kufos) is set to host a pivotal three-day international conference focused on wetlands, commencing on November 19 at its Panangad campus. Aimed at addressing critical environmental challenges, the conference-titled “Tropical BioSummit 2025”—will be inaugurated by B. Meenakumari, the former chairperson of the National Biodiversity Authority, at 10:30 a.m. The overarching theme of the event is “Reviving Wetlands, Restoring Balance,” spotlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts.
Organized in collaboration with the Centre for Tropical Biodiversity Conservation, the summit promises to bring together a diverse array of experts and stakeholders in the fields of conservation and environmental policy. Notable attendees include Jörg Freyhof from the Natural History Museum in Berlin, Steve Lockett, Executive Director of the Mahseer Trust in the UK, K.H.M.L. Amaralal, Deputy Director General of the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency in Sri Lanka, M.V. Ramana Murthy, Mission Director of India’s Deep Ocean Mission, and Ritesh Kumar, Director of Wetlands International (South Asia). Their participation underscores the global significance of wetland conservation.
In addition to the main conference, Kufos has planned a series of engaging workshops and events. On December 8, an Indo-European workshop will focus on “One-Health Monitoring of Wetlands,” emphasizing the interconnectedness of environmental health and human wellbeing. Following this, a Blue and Green Climate LitFest is scheduled for December 17, which aims to promote dialogue around climate issues. Looking ahead, an international symposium on seaweeds will take place next March, providing a platform for further scientific exchange.
Kufos Vice-Chancellor A. Biju Kumar, speaking to the media on Tuesday, highlighted the urgency of the conference’s focus, stating that “reviving wetlands is not just about ecosystems; it’s about restoring a critical balance in our environment.” The significance of wetlands in combating climate change, supporting biodiversity, and supplying resources cannot be overstated, making this conference a timely endeavor.
The event is expected to draw significant interest from environmentalists, researchers, and policymakers, all eager to share insights and collaborate on solutions toward sustainable wetlands management. As climate scenarios become increasingly challenging, the discussions at “Tropical BioSummit 2025” could serve as a catalyst for new initiatives in wetland conservation.
K. Dinesh, the Registrar at Kufos, along with V.P. Limna Mol, the conference’s organizing secretary, and Anoop Vijayakumar from the Centre for Tropical Biodiversity Conservation, are integral to the planning and execution of this important event. As the summit approaches, anticipation builds within the community for what promises to be an enlightening and impactful series of discussions.
This conference not only emphasizes the intricate role wetlands play in our ecosystem but also aligns with global conversations on environmental resilience and sustainability. With a mix of scientific discourse and policy formulation, the gathering at Kufos seeks to inspire action and foster partnerships aimed at safeguarding these vital ecosystems for future generations.
