Asaduddin Declares No Alliance in Assam Amid Rumors of Unification
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has firmly rejected rumors regarding a possible alliance in Assam. On November 18, the party stated it has not made any decisions about beginning operations in the state or entering into a partnership with any local party. AIMIM took to Twitter to express its stance clearly, calling the reports “blatantly false” and affirming that it neither plans to start operations in Assam nor forge an alliance.
This denial follows comments made a day earlier by Badaruddin Ajmal, president of the AIUDF and a former MP, who hinted at a potential electoral understanding between himself and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Assam. He indicated that the two leaders are in regular communication, stating that “everything is possible.”
Ajmal, who has recently emerged from a lengthy illness that sidelined him from political activities, referred to himself and Owaisi as “brothers,” suggesting they might campaign together in the upcoming elections. He also set an ambitious goal for his party, the AIUDF, which previously secured four seats, now aiming for “forty.”
In his announcement, Ajmal expressed readiness to return to active politics, deeming the current political landscape favorable for competition. His party is planning to field candidates in around 35 constituencies, asserting that they “will not allow the BJP to benefit.”
AIMIM’s prompt rebuttal raises questions about whether any formal talks have occurred between the two parties, despite Ajmal’s optimistic public statements suggesting otherwise.
