Resignation Announcement: Ex-IPS Bhaskar Jyoti Mohanty Shares Insights on Facebook
Former Chief of Assam Police, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, has resigned from the position of Chief Information Commissioner of the Assam Information Commission. He made the announcement through a detailed post on Facebook.
Mahanta stated, “After retiring as the Chief of Assam Police, I joined the Assam Information Commission as Chief Information Commissioner on April 5, 2023. In my tenure, I endeavored to bring some innovations while fulfilling my duties with dedication and integrity. These included strict measures against the misuse of the Right to Information Act, transitioning the office to a paperless environment, facilitating online applications for information seekers, ensuring regular hearings and resolutions, and eliminating the backlog of unresolved applications. I also promoted the use of video conferencing for hearings and launched helpful brochures for the public.
Despite my emotional and proactive involvement with the Assam Information Commission, I have decided to step down from my position due to special circumstances. As you all know, my brother, Shyamkanu Mahanta, has recently been implicated in the sensational case surrounding the death of beloved artist Zubeen Garg. In light of this, I felt it necessary to resign to avoid any doubts or suspicions should anyone seek information related to my brother. I communicated this to the Honorable Chief Minister’s office and advised my colleagues to keep me informed of any such requests. Although I had not received any such inquiries until recently, an individual has now submitted an application concerning government funding for various cultural programs, including inquiries about Shyamkanu Mahanta.
The applicant also sent me a personal letter expressing complete trust in my integrity and transparency, as the information sought includes details related to my brother. Hence, they expect me to maintain a pure stance as Chief Information Commissioner. Given my prior contemplation on the matter, I submitted my resignation letter to His Excellency the Governor without delay. Those who know me are aware that, even while in office, the truth regarding the individual in question would have been upheld. However, to eliminate any potential doubts, I made this decision to resign.
Serving as an IPS officer in the Assam-Meghalaya cadre has allowed me to contribute significantly to the state, and it has been an honor to hold the position of Chief Information Commissioner. I express my gratitude to His Excellency the Governor and the Honorable Chief Minister, as well as to all those who supported me during my tenure.”
