Shocking Developments: Judicial Panel Records Statements in Zubeen Case
Guwahati: A one-man inquiry commission led by Justice Soumitra Saikia has commenced its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of music icon Zubeen Garg, who passed away last month. The commission, established by the state government on October 3, began taking public statements on Monday. Among the first to submit statements were filmmaker Luit Kumar Barman and TMC leader Dulu Ahmed, as part of the four individuals who provided their accounts to the commission.
On October 17, the commission issued a public notice soliciting statements via affidavits supported by documents. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urged the public to participate and cooperate with the commission formed to investigate the mysterious death of Zubeen Garg, a revered cultural figure.
Despite the commission launching its public statements on Monday, no individuals came forward on the first day to share their accounts. The Chief Minister stated on social media, “The government’s decision to form a judicial commission headed by a sitting judge of the Hon’ble High Court to examine the tragic death of our beloved Zubeen Garg is a landmark step in the pursuit of truth and justice.” He emphasized the necessity for full cooperation in the investigation to ensure transparency and impartiality, using the hashtag #JusticeForZubeenGarg.
Zubeen Garg allegedly drowned while swimming in Singapore on September 19, shortly after arriving on September 17 for a performance at the fourth edition of the North East India Festival (NEIF). CM Sarma claimed on Monday that Garg was murdered, casting doubt during the ongoing investigation.
The one-man inquiry was established under The Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952, to explore the facts and circumstances surrounding Zubeen’s unfortunate death and to clarify the events before and after the incident. The commission will also investigate any potential negligence, omissions, or lapses from individuals, authorities, or institutions related to the case.
Furthermore, it will assess if external factors, such as foul play or conspiracy, played a role in the incident. The commission will accept affidavits from the public until November 21.
