Indian Railways has achieved a remarkable milestone with the successful high-speed trial of the Vande Bharat sleeper train. This pioneering train, which marks a significant advancement in railway travel, was put to the test in the Kota division of West Central Railway. Conducted by the Test Directorate team of the Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO) in Lucknow, these trials took place from November 2 to 17, aimed at assessing the train’s performance and safety standards.
The high-speed trials were executed using a 16-coach sleeper rake on the Sawai Madhopur–Kota–Nagda section, reaching a maximum speed of 180 km/h. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Saurabh Jain highlighted the trial’s significance in evaluating key technical parameters such as braking systems, stability, vibration levels, and electrical reliability. Under the guidance of RDSO Test Director Radheshyam Tiwari, the tests mimicked real passenger conditions, with the train carrying a weight of 800 tons plus an additional 108 tons from canisters filled with iron dust, totaling 908 tons. Reports indicated that the train exhibited outstanding stability, even at high speeds; not a single glass of water placed inside spilled during the run.
The Vande Bharat sleeper successfully completed a 50-kilometre Long Confirmatory Run between Rohalkhurd and Laban stations at top speed. Additional tests were carried out, including oscillation and wet-track emergency braking tests, ensuring performance reliability in diverse conditions. This trial is being celebrated as a major success for the Indian Railways, marking a crucial step forward in India’s initiative to develop high-speed, long-distance sleeper trains utilizing entirely indigenous technology.
