New Mexico Makes History: First State to Offer FREE Child Care, Saving Families $12,000 a Year!
New Mexico has made history as the first state in the U.S. to offer free child care to all families, potentially saving them around $12,000 annually. This pioneering initiative aims to empower New Mexico families to work, pursue educational opportunities, and ultimately elevate the state from poverty. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham emphasized the critical role of child care in supporting family stability and workforce participation, stating, “By investing in universal child care, we are giving families financial relief, supporting our economy, and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to grow and thrive.”
Under the new program, families will receive state vouchers to cover both public and private child care fees, regardless of income. This initiative culminates years of efforts by New Mexico to expand free child care, which began with the establishment of the Early Childhood Education and Care Department in 2019. In contrast, Connecticut recently implemented a program that provides free child care for families earning less than $100,000 per year and caps expenses at 7% of income for those earning more. Additionally, New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has proposed a similar initiative for universal child care at no cost.
For many families, such as Taos special education teacher Allyson O’Brien, the financial impact of this program is significant. O’Brien estimates saving about $12,000 each year in child care costs for her son, Otis, who is nearly two and a half. Living just above New Mexico’s previous income threshold for free child care, O’Brien shared relief about the program’s benefits. “We’ll be able to go on vacation; we won’t have to decide what bills we’re going to pay, like, are we going to do propane or the mortgage?” she noted.
To further enhance child care infrastructure, the state is launching a $12.7 million low-interest loan fund aimed at constructing, expanding, and renovating child care facilities, with an additional $20 million requested in the Fiscal Year 2027 budget. Alison McPartlon, director of the University of New Mexico-Taos Kids’ Campus child care center, highlighted the potential for increased access: “There will be more centers coming up.”
The state is also focused on building a robust supply of infant and toddler care by partnering with employers and school districts, while launching a statewide campaign to recruit licensed and registered home care providers. This multifaceted approach aims to ensure that working families have ample child care options to support their needs.
