The United States has granted India a vital six-month extension of the sanctions waiver for its operations at Iran’s Chabahar Port, confirmed the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday. This decision provides significant, albeit temporary, relief for New Delhi’s ambitious regional trade and connectivity initiatives. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “The US has granted India a six-month exemption from American sanctions on Chabahar port; we remain engaged with the US to conclude a trade deal.”
The waiver is crucial for India, ensuring continuous access to a strategic trade corridor that enables the transport of goods and humanitarian aid to Afghanistan and Central Asia, circumventing Pakistan. The operation of Chabahar Port is seen as fundamental to India’s effectiveness in regional outreach.
This extension follows India’s landmark ten-year agreement signed in May 2024 with Iran’s Port and Maritime Organisation to operate the facility. New Delhi secured this waiver after intense diplomatic interactions with Washington, emphasizing that the port’s ongoing operation is essential for regional stability and connectivity.
Chabahar is also a key element in the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). Landlocked nations, including Uzbekistan, have shown interest in utilizing the port to diversify trade routes and seek alternatives to China’s extensive Belt and Road network. Reports indicate that even Russia is exploring using the port via Central Asian states to enhance trade links with India and other Asian regions, underscoring the port’s geopolitical and economic significance.
