Zubeen Garg Death Probe: New Arrests and Extended Custody Raise Concerns
A local court in Guwahati has extended the judicial custody of five individuals involved in the investigation surrounding the death of singer Zubeen Garg by an additional 14 days. This decision came after a virtual hearing before Chief Judicial Magistrate Kamrup Metropolitan. The accused include Shyamkanu Mahanta, the chief organizer of the North East India Festival, along with Siddhartha Sharma, Garg’s manager, Sandipan Garg, a police officer and cousin of the singer, and his personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya. An official stated that the current judicial custody of these individuals would end tomorrow, and they were presented via virtual mode during the hearing.
The five accused have been detained in Baksa jail since their transfer on October 16, following the conclusion of their police remand. Their transfer led to violent protests outside the prison, which resulted in injuries to both police and media personnel. Zubeen Garg, a beloved singer, tragically drowned while swimming in Singapore during his visit for the 4th North East India Festival on September 19.
In addition to the five already in custody, two more individuals, Amritprava Mahanta and Sekharjyoti Goswami-members of Garg’s band-are in judicial custody at Haflong prison, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to seven. A Special Investigation Team composed of ten members from the state police’s CID is currently handling the investigation, led by Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, who recently traveled to Singapore to gather information pertinent to the case.
