Rashmika Mandanna Reveals the Thrill of Playing Betaal: A Unique Adventure
Actress Rashmika Mandanna has shared her thoughts on taking on a unique role as a vampire named Tadaka in the upcoming film “Thamma.” Speaking to IANS from Mumbai, Mandanna expressed that stepping into the world of vampires was both a daunting challenge and an exhilarating creative adventure. She described her experience as “extremely foreign,” admitting, “I don’t know how to be a vampire. I don’t know how to be a Betaal.”
According to Rashmika, embodying a Betaal— a mythical spirit that appears in Indian folklore— is particularly complex as it demands the duality of existing in a human world while depicting supernatural qualities. She termed the experience as “very interesting.”
The actress reflected on the artistic high of transforming into a character so distinct from those she has portrayed in the past. “Playing a normal character is one sort of high,” she said. “But when you play a character like this, it’s a different creature altogether, and that gives me a different kind of high. I absolutely loved it.”
Rashmika credited the guidance of producer Amar Kaushik and director Aditya Sarpotdar, saying that their support helped her navigate this unfamiliar territory. “I had a strong, secure cushioning from Amar sir and Aditya sir,” she noted. “As an artist, I started with a blank slate and asked them to guide me through it because I had no reference.”
“Thamma” also features Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Ayushmann Khurrana in key roles, set against a backdrop of a fictional world. This film will see a crossover with Varun Dhawan’s “Bhediya” and is part of the larger Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, which connects to the “Stree” films, “Bhediya,” and “Munjya.”
The narrative centers on a journalist, played by Ayushmann, who becomes embroiled in a power struggle involving Rashmika and Siddiqui’s vampire characters. Following “Thamma,” Rashmika is set to appear in “The Girlfriend,” a Telugu romantic drama alongside Dheekshith Shetty, directed by Rahul Ravindran. This film is anticipated to be released on November 7, 2025, in various languages, including Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam. Additionally, she will be seen in “Cocktail 2” and “Mysaa.”
