Trucker Protests Erupt in Kolasib: Roads Blocked Amid Crippling Conditions
Tensions escalated in Kolasib district on Thursday as police detained several members of the Kolasib District Drivers and Owners’ Joint Action Committee. This action followed the committee’s initiation of a four-day blockade along the Vairengte-Sairang stretch of NH-306 and NH-06 (Kolasib-Bairabi) in protest of the deteriorating conditions of these highways.
The arrests took place at Rengtetlangsang, located on the outskirts of Kolasib town, near the Assam border. Kolasib Superintendent of Police David H Lalthangliana indicated that the arrests were executed under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which prohibits gatherings of more than five individuals. The detained members were subsequently taken to the Kolasib Police Station for further processing.
Earlier, the truckers’ group had declared its intention to implement a blockade starting at 7 am on Thursday, demanding urgent repairs for the Kawnpui-Sairang and Kolasib-Bairabi segments of the national highways. They accused the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd, along with the Mizoram Government, of neglecting the roads for an extended period. They claimed that no repair work had been carried out during the last two dry seasons, despite the roads being in a “dangerously dilapidated” state.
