Frothy white foam washed ashore at Pattinapakkam in Chennai on Wednesday, a phenomenon linked to recent heavy rains and rising river water flow. Fishermen in the area suggest that changes in wind direction and sea currents have contributed to this unusual occurrence. According to Karunakaran, a fisherman from nearby Urur Kuppam, such foam is typically found when winds shift, causing water to churn. However, he noted that the churning remains minimal in their locality.

Despite the annual occurrence of this foaming, community leaders expressed skepticism regarding explanations provided by government officials. K. Bharathi, a representative of the fishing community, argued that attributing the foam to high soap residue from the Adyar River is unconvincing. “People wash and bathe in rivers elsewhere without similar foaming issues in the estuaries. This foam seems more related to industrial waste being discharged into our rivers,” he stated. Bharathi called for stringent action against industries polluting the water.

Another community leader, Kabaddi Maran, emphasized the ecological implications of the foam. He pointed out that estuaries serve as vital breeding grounds for fish during the monsoon season, a period when fishing activity typically decreases. “If this foaming continues, fish may avoid these waters, ultimately jeopardizing the livelihoods of many fishermen,” Maran cautioned.

Local fishermen have long underscored the importance of clean water for sustaining their community and its economy. As pollution concerns mount, residents are calling for greater accountability from industrial sources contributing to environmental degradation.

The discharge of chemical waste into rivers remains a pressing issue in Chennai, with activists urging governmental oversight to protect both marine life and the interests of local fishing communities.
