Kiren Rijiju Energizes BJP Campaign Ahead of Dampa Bypoll in Mizoram
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju began his two-day visit to Mizoram on Wednesday as part of a campaign for the BJP candidate in the upcoming Dampa assembly by-election, scheduled for November 11. Shortly after arriving in Aizawl, Rijiju proceeded to the West Phaileng area, part of the Dampa assembly segment in Mamit district, to support BJP candidate Lalhmangaiha, as stated by Johny Lalthanpuia, the media convener for the Mizoram BJP.
On Thursday, the minister is expected to address a public rally at Reiek before returning to Delhi the same day. Other senior BJP leaders, including Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh, will also visit Mizoram to campaign for their candidate.
The campaign for the Dampa by-election is intensifying, with all competing parties striving to attract voters. Chief Minister Lalduhoma expressed his confidence in the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), claiming they will emerge victorious in the bypoll, citing a historical trend that favors the ruling party in assembly by-elections in the state.
Congress President Lal Thanzara, addressing party workers in Kanghmung village, criticized both the ruling ZPM and the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) for failing to fulfill past electoral promises. The need for this bypoll arose following the death of incumbent MNF MLA Lalrintluanga Sailo on July 21.
Election officials note that the upcoming bypoll will feature a five-cornered contest among various political parties. The deadline for withdrawal of candidacies is October 24. The ruling ZPM has nominated Mizo singer and preacher Vanlalsailova, while the main opposition MNF has put forth Dr. R Lalthangliana, its senior vice president and former health minister. The Congress party has fielded John Rotluangliana, its vice president and former transport minister. The BJP has nominated Lalhmangaiha, and the smaller People’s Conference (PC) has chosen its vice president, K Zahmingthanga.
According to the most recent electoral roll published on September 30, the Dampa assembly segment comprises 20,790 voters, including 10,185 women.
